Red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) along the shore of Río San Pedro
Inland mangroves are an amusing ecological exception among mangrove ecosystems around the world. Learn about the existence of red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) in Río San Pedro (in Petén), their ecology, their natural history, and the first documentation ever made through high-quality photographs by the FLAAR Mesoamérica team on Guatemalan territory.
Description
The inland mangroves of Rio San Pedro and Tabasco are among the few exceptions of mangrove ecosystems in the world. They were first documented and studied in depth just a few years ago. However, the few remnant red mangrove trees (Rhizophora mangle) that occur in the Guatemalan side of Rio San Pedro have been barely studied, and they have probably never been documented with high-quality photos. For that reason, the FLAAR Mesoamérica team carried out a documentation project to find these trees. The photographs of such project are showcased in this FLAAR report, among existing information regarding its ecology, natural history, and particular relationship with epiphyte species that seem to have evolved together as a relict ecosystem with millenary background.
