The pine relict of the Maya Biosphere Reserve: A pine-oak-tasiste palm ecosystem in Bajo de Santa Fe
The pine forest in the Bajo de Santa Fe in Petén is a unique and isolated ecosystem of approximately 200 hectares, considered the only gymnosperm forest within the Maya Biosphere Reserve. Its origin is debated, as it could be natural from the last glacial period or anthropogenic due to its proximity to ancient Maya settlements. This relict faces serious risks due to its limited genome, slow regeneration, and anthropogenic threats such as fires and logging, which, coupled with the lack of quality photographic documentation, motivated the FLAAR team to undertake an expedition to study and visually document it for the first time.
Description
Given its uniqueness and the almost non-existent high-quality visual documentation, the FLAAR Mesoamerica team decided to undertake its documentation. Planning the expedition was a challenge, as no publication provided its exact coordinates, only a vague reference to its location. To locate it, the team combined the use of satellite imagery, the knowledge of local guides, and collaboration with CONAP and the administration of Tikal Park, thus managing to identify and access this valuable ecological relict for its study and photographic recording.
