Jaguars on Late Classic Maya Plates
The jaguar is a feline that is commonly found amongst the Classic Maya art and culture. The present FLAAR Report is a compilation of photographs and illustrations of jaguars on Late Classic Maya plates, portrayed in different scenarios and styles. The variations most commonly observed between the art pieces include anthropomorphic jaguars, different spot patterns and added elements like floral headdresses or other animals.
Description
The jaguar is a feline that is commonly found amongst the Classic Maya art and culture. The present FLAAR Report is a compilation of photographs and illustrations of jaguars on Late Classic Maya plates, portrayed in different scenarios and styles. In some cases, jaguars are depicted anthropomorphically, sitting, standing or holding decapitated heads, while in others they are represented in their natural state. Another common variation are the ways spots are placed on the jaguar, sometimes in geometrical patterns or only appearing on the head. Additional elements are also found, for example other animals like bats, deer and other felines, as well as headdresses with flowers or tailfeathers decorating the jaguar’s head.
