Recognition and Documentation of Biodiversity in Guatemala
FLAAR Annual Reports
Until today, FLAAR Mesoamerica continued its mission to research, document, and share knowledge about the rich biodiversity of Guatemala and the greater Mesoamerican region. Through field expeditions, collaboration with local communities, and partnerships with national and international institutions, our team made significant progress in the recognition of species and the scientific and visual documentation of native flora and fauna.
Throughout this period, numerous studies were carried out in key locations such as the Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo National Park in Petén and various zones within the Maya Biosphere Reserve. These regions, critical for ecological conservation, are home to an extraordinary variety of endemic and endangered species. Our work focused on both well-known species and those that are just beginning to be studied.
Highlights from this period include:
- Identification and photographic documentation of rare species of orchids, bromeliads, fungi, and native trees.
- Recording of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians in their natural habitats, with special attention to their behaviors, ecosystems, and life cycles.
- Recognition of little-known or at-risk species, contributing valuable data for their protection and conservation.
- Use of advanced imaging technology to capture high-resolution visuals and create accessible visual databases for researchers and educators.
FLAAR Mesoamerica Anual Reports
These annual reports not only reflect the fieldwork carried out by FLAAR Mesoamerica but also serve as a valuable contribution to environmental education, responsible ecotourism, and the sustainable management of Guatemala’s natural resources.
Our commitment remains strong: to protect, study, and raise awareness about the biodiversity of Mesoamerica so that present and future generations can appreciate and preserve it.
