Sky Bands on Late Classic Maya Plates
Sky bands are a type of iconography found primarily on Late Classic Maya plates, vases, stelae and codices. These illustrations are a series of celestial motifs enclosed in rectangular frames, organized adjacently and spaced apart. The present report documents these sky bands on illustrations and photographs of Maya plates, plus the story behind the study of the 33 motifs that have been named by researchers Carlson and Landis in 1985 and C. Lahyser in 2018.

Sky bands are a type of iconography found primarily on Late Classic Maya plates, vases, stelae and codices from this period. These illustrations are a series of celestial motifs which are enclosed in rectangular frames, organized adjacently and spaced apart. The present report is a first edition and it documents these motifs on illustrations and photographs of Maya plates, as well as the story behind the naming of several of them. Twenty of these motifs were studied and named by Carlson and Landis (1985), and in 2018 Chris Lahyser named another eleven motifs in his MA thesis. However, many motifs have not been studied or named yet, representing an information void that could be an interesting research topic. Some of the sky motifs found in this report include the Kan Cross band and Codex Style celestial motifs.
