Amphitecna latifolia
Amphitecna latifolia grows several meters inland from the high tide line, found on trees and shrubs, size dependent on soil or sand, and the amount of nearby water. Its fruit is easily washed away by the tides, which has allowed the species to settle in various places. The seeds can be roasted and ground to make a chocolate drink.
Description
Amphitecna latifolia is common to see along the sandy beaches in front of Amatique Bay, from the river all the way down the coast to Rio Sarstún. This plant has edible, medicinal and utilitarian uses, the fruit is about 10 cm long, it is characterized by its globose shape, its hard and smooth shell, inside it has an edible white pulp that has a quite pleasant flavor. In Panama, the fruit is used to make musical instruments such as guiras or the famous churucas.
