Edible Plants of Wetlands – Provided Food for the Classic Maya: Sagittaria species
There are plenty of plants living in wetlands that are edible, as Sagittaria species. With its tubers and flowers, Sagittaria latifolia has been used by Mayan people as a source of food in lowland areas.
Description
During certain expeditions, FLAAR Mesoamerica’s team has found several plant species of relevance as a source of food by Mayan people, including plants growing in aquatic habitats such as wetlands. Sagittaria latiifolia is one of those species: an edible plant pollinated by insects and dispersed by water and animals, found in lowland areas in the Municipio de Livingston, Izabal.
